Mario Dies Soundwave Art

The sound of mario meeting his demise is possibly one of the most frustrating yet well known sounds in gaming history. Anyone who has played a mario game will have heard this sound more times than will ever likely admit to. I’ve played many of the early mario games and love that little chubby plumber. Just a shame the princess was always in another damn castle.

I love the way this soundwave turned out. It actually looks like it sounds so much. The sounwave used is from the NES version of Super Mario Bros. To me this is still the best mario game ever made. Simple, adictive and to this day has amazing sound effects and music.

This artwork was created using Poser, Photoshop and 3D Studio Max. It was part of a concept for a video game.

Basically it was an inovative imaginarry racing game that would mix elements of powered racing and extreme sports. To start with you would be pretty much free wheeling down hills with a wheel attached to each limb. (Local leagues and competitions.) As you progress you could purchase new parts and enter races of with different classifications. The pinacle would be an F1 style high powered, high adrenaline series of races. Focus would be strongly on racer characteristics and rivalries. Beating a rival should be almost as rewarding as winning a race.

I have always loved racing games but they generally just concentrate on faceless racing, there is rarely an actual aim rather than just winning against un named drones.

3D studio Max is a medium that allows so much. Creating textures and texture maps in Photoshop and seeing them with realistic lighting and atmospheric effects can be very rewarding. Sometimes just a few simple 3D elements and some moody lighting can portay more than just a static scene.

The idea behind this image was that it was a car nut’s lockup. The grafitti on the walls in the the darkness give the scene an element of danger and grunge. No post 3D work was done on the image, it is entirely 3ds max.
