3D studio Max is a medium that allows so much. Creating textures and texture maps in Photoshop and seeing them with realistic lighting and atmospheric effects can be very rewarding. Sometimes just a few simple 3D elements and some moody lighting can portay more than just a static scene.

The idea behind this image was that it was a car nut’s lockup. The grafitti on the walls in the the darkness give the scene an element of danger and grunge. No post 3D work was done on the image, it is entirely 3ds max.

Tanned Girl

I have no idea who the beautiful girl is in this illustration unfortunately. The illustration was created entirely in Adobe Illustrator. I used mesh gradients to achieve the hyper realistic skin shading.

The contrast of the left image to the right was a subtle nice and nasty contrast. The girl on the left is paler, less overt and more angelic. She has bikini ‘white bits’ showing she has an element of dignity. The girl on the left in contrast is tanned and, although almost exactly the same image, looks more outgoing. The darker skin tone and lack of tan lines suggest promiscuity and lack of shame.

I could have worked on it more in Photoshop but I wanted the image to be entirely vector and therefore completely scalable.

ps bucket

One of the most basic and simple tools in photoshop. I always loved that it was refered to as a bucket rather than a paint pot.

Ironically, the paint bucket tool wasn’t used in creating this artwork.

As a design and retro pixel art geek I created this image. The simplicity of the Photoshop icon with a strong solid colour contrast perfectly.

The pixelation when enlarged, for me adds to the appeal of these art prints. Areas of the icon allow the colour of the background through just slightly. This helps blend the icon nicely and gives a more aesthetic, balanced feel.

Goodbye Summer Love

Goodbye Summer Love

An image created in Adobe Illustrator. My attempt with this illustration was to try and portray dewey eyed sadness. The idea was that a summer romance was cut short and she knows she’ll never be with the man she loved so briefly.

The muted pale blues allow the stronger reds to dominate the scene linking the lips to the distant plane.

The paint brush is the first tool everyone learns when they first get photoshop. Such a simple tool initially but so versitile when perfected. This print was an attempt to evoke the memories of the inocence and wonder when first using this amazing program.

Girl Watercolour

This was a study and attept to digitally create a simple watercolour image using Adobe Photoshop. Many brushes were used in various layers to create the effective watercolour texture.

A gradient multiply overlay was used to add the colour wash from pink, through red, to plum.

Free as a Bird

I’m not sure if there is a legal age limit for driving a boat but the kid in the original photo of this didn’t seem to care.

The expression on his face is one of enjoyment and slight trepidation. Happy for now, but if anything goes wrong he’ll quickly rethink what he was doing at the helm.

Created in Adobe Illustrator I kept the colour pallette  of the background to muted greys and blues to allow the young lad with his, quite frankly, cool as hell hair to stand out.

Kiss Like a Fish

The subject of this image was very fond of the fish he caught. He wanted it imortalised into a cool illustration.

Adobe Illustrator was used to carefully trace around every contour. To keep a modern feel to the image, only block colours were used. All sense of material warping and folding was achieved with simple lines.

I’m especially happy with the hair of the guy in this image. It can be very theraputic tracing around spiky or messy hair.

I’m not sure whether the man and fish are still together, I may have heard a rumour that they bought a house and were trying for kids. I wish them and their nmermaid offspring well.

Farmhouse

farmhouse night

A simple illustration study in Adobe Illustrator. I was having a bit of a minimalist moment. The block colours with a muted colour pallette create an atmosphere that conveys the tranquility and calmness of a farm at night. One single house with a clear sky above. Not something I ever really see in the city. I did sneak Ursa Major in there as it is one of my favourite star constelations. I’ll not say what my favourite is as I wouldn’t want any stars getting upset.

The style could easily be duplicated with layers of paper. That may be something i could explore in the future.
