Soundwave Art – Al Green, Let’s Stay Together

al green lets stay together

Al Green, Let’s Stay Together – Soundwave Art by Alex Patterson.

Music and art are 2 of the biggest loves and inspirations in my life. Creating art from music perfectly combines both. The soundwave is converted into a visual wave and then manipulated in photoshop in various ways to create my soundwave art. The beauty of working this way is that the music directly inspires where the artwork may end up.

Always liked this song by Al Green. Love how it was used in the soundtrack of one of my favourite movies (Pulp Fiction) too.

Soundwave Art – The Stone Roses, I am the Resurrection.

The Stone Roses, in my view are one of the all time greatest bands. Creating this art was a great excuse to listen to one of my all time favourite albums (The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses). Had the pleasure of seeing them live last year at Heaton Park, Manchester. 100,000 people in a field enjoying great music is an experience i’ll never forget.  In the above artwork, for the background, I have used the album cover art created by ex guitarist of The Stone Roses, John Squire. Squire is now a great artist, I’d definitely reccomend checking out his body of work.

Question Everything???

Question Everything
Question Everything

Simple minimalist art depicting my one rule in life that i will not break. Question Everything! Look carefully, it’s a Q and an E. By questioning everything you can avoid so many of lifes pitfalls and prevent yourself becoming just another consumerist sheep.

Below are a few of my views and how i question them (Not everyone will agree… and thats good).

NEWS/MEDIA
If you believe everything that the news tells you, you will likely become a nervous wreck. Good news does not sell. Sensationalism sells! News reports generally have an ‘angle’ that has been simplified so the (dumb) masses understand. Before you react to what you see, try to consider some of the other angles. Even the most horendous things that happen in the world have more aspects than what a reporter will tell you. Look at all the facts and make your own, considered opinion.

FASHION
Yes, it’s pretty… sometimes. But do you really need to change everything you own to keep up with trends or are you being affected by magazines, advertising and friends?

POLITICS
I don’t trust any politician, from any party. I don’t believe that they ever make any real difference. Promises are made to get into power and when in power they are almost never followed through. No long term workable plans will ever be put into practice as they are not immediately quantifiable. Goals in politics are all short term as a party may not be in power long enough to take credit for any long term successes. When a politician pushes an idea, just stop and consider why he is saying what he is saying. Is he trying to be popular, contrare to other parties, or are they just trying to improve their own personal profile?

ADVERTISING & CONSUMERISM
A big hate in my life is advertising. It is just in your face, all the time trying to make you feel bad about yoursel unless you have the latest things or look a certain way. Adverts are not entertainment, they are offensive and intrusive and only there to make you spend your hard earned.  All special offers are still heavilly weighted in favour of the seller. Buying something because its on special offer is only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway. If you bought it because it was on special, you fell for their tricks, hook line and sinker. Pause and consider, do i really need this outfit?/CD?/game?/DVD?/go large? or am i just buying it ‘because’?

COMIC SANSQuestion why any person or establishment would use such an ugly typeface. It has no place in civilized society.

RELIGION
I have looked into religion in some depth and have not seen one shred of evidence that there is any truth in an all seeing God or gods. To follow a religion you basically have whole heartedly accept an undeniable truth of which there is no proof. Looking at facts, religion has caused more wars, destroyed more history and held back the advancement of the human race by hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Just to avoid any confusion, religion has nothing to do with morals. Morals can be taught without trying to instill fear in a person. Preaching religion as far as i can see is preaching fear. That fear is intended to control and manipulate the weak minded.

PEOPLE AND RACE
All people are equal. No one is better than anyone else. Your validity and importance in life should not come down to rank, job title, colour, education or religion. People are basically the same, where ever they are from and whatever they do. Question what you have been taught, without prejudous, and that is the only real conclusion.

Okay, i may have gone a little deep there, and I fully understand that you, as the reader, will not agree with everything i have written. That is a good thing.

Question Everything…. and make your ‘OWN’ considered opinions.

Comments welcome.

Iron Man 3 “Ironmantone” Swatch Art

ironman mark 35 red snapper pantone art
ironman mark 35 red snapper pantone art by Alex Patterson

To celebrate the release of Iron Man 3 I endeavored to create some custom Pantone style swatch art. I named them “Ironmantone” 🙂. Each piece depicts the suits that are on show in the Iron Man 3 movie.

All created from Pantone style colour swatches. Each “Ironmantone” is made from 1600 individual swatches in a 40×40 grid. Each swatch is the average colour of the particular region of the image. Look up close and all you will see are coloured square Pantone style swatches; Take a step back and the iron man 3 suits are revealed. To purchase any of these prints send a message and i will make them available at my web art store Mono-Wave-Art.

Boxed CMYK

Boxed CMYK
Boxed CMYK

Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. These simple four colours combined in printing can create a huge colour gamut. Not sure if its because i’ve worked in print for so long but there is something about the base colour combination that still brings a smile to my face.

The boxes are simple and clean with CMYK colours spilling from them. Combining a few of my art staples, this shows my design geek love of pantones, CMYK colour pallettes, simple layout and clean geometry.

The Lakes 2013

Recently, for my brothers 40th, I had a trip with 9 other lads, to the Lake District, a beautiful part of the world. However, it had been planned in March to avoid any adverse weather. :/ Mother nature decided otherwise and graced us with a freak spring weekend of heavy snow.

2 4

The disturbing snow-swept journey meant we could hardly see where the road actually was. Not the greatest idea to be on country roads that gritters dont ever visit. Our first activity of the weekend was bike riding. (No pics of that – it’s almost impossible to ride a bike whilst taking pictures).

The bike riding was cut short as there was zero grip on the wheels going uphill and so much snow that you couldn’t open your eyes going downhill (Not really all that safe). Also, we were concerned the roads may become unusable. Night out with plenty of beers (… and kareoke – eek!) made up for the disapointing bike effort.

Day 2 – Hike

Again the snow scuppered the planned journey, but fortunately we had someone in the group that, i quote, ‘knows the hills like the back of his hand’.

DSCF2640 DSCF2639

Despite the weather the trek was on!!

DSCF2647 DSCF2649

Even the local residents seemed rather puzzled that we’d be up in the hills in these conditions.

DSCF2651 DSCF2649

Although difficult going, the views were beautiful.

DSCF2652 DSCF2655 DSCF2670 DSCF2671

Love the above shot as all the lads descend and ascend down a mini valley. The ‘V’ shape of the row of men mirrors the peak of the hill in the background. Also love how everyone seemed to pull the same ‘arm out’ pose while crossing a small stream.

DSCF2675 DSCF2678 DSCF2683 DSCF2686

Some of the snowdrifts were over 4 foot deep. Not easy to get through with my little, unfit legs, ha!

DSCF2696 DSCF2712 DSCF2716 DSCF2727

Sometimes the blizzards were almost unbearable but when the weather calmed, the hills, lakes and streams were stunning.

DSCF2732 DSCF2738

We weren’t the only things brave enough to venture to the hills. The sheep gathered on a small mound of exposed grass seemed content. We also met an amazingly photogenic cow that happily posed for the above shot.

DSCF2744 DSCF2748 DSCF2753 DSCF2757

The journey led us to the discovery of an amazing cave. The only way in – and out was via a series of well placed stepping stones (amazingly no one slipped into the water.) The cave was amazing, so many colours in the rocks. The contrast between the dark stone and bright white snow blew me away.

DSCF2758 DSCF2760

It was shorlty after the cave that it the trek got more difficult – especially for me. We stopped for a breather and to contemplate our route. Someone pointed up the hill to the peaks and my heart dropped. As we ascended my legs cramped up and I almost turned back. I powered on with the help of a donated, well needed energy drink.

DSCF2762 DSCF2763

After what seemed like uphill after uphill we reached the peak.

DSCF2767 DSCF2765

Finally, to my relief, we had some downhill sections. Some of these did involve more snow drifts and the occasional hill-bum-slide.

All in all a great trip – hope to get back there soon.

Would recomend that everyone visits the lakes at some point. Lots to do, and amazing surroundings… Even when it snows.

Spiderman Pantone Swatch art

spiderrman pantone

Spiderman painstakingly created from 1,156 Adobe Illustrator Pantone swatches. A fairly embarrasing ommision from my previous Pantone comic post. (link)  (Oops!)Please leave a comment with any other pantone arts you’d like me to create… or repost/pass this on.

Each pantone swatch is the average colour of that particular region of the image. The overall image is only comprehensible from a distance, up close, it is just a series of block colour swatches.

If you like this keep an eye on my web store mono wave art. I will soon be adding framed art pantone prints (Maybe even the ability to personalise them). Right now you can buy beautiful soundwave art prints of your own recordings or your favourite song. Great wedding gift…  personalised sound wave art of the ‘fist dance song’ will earn you a massive amount of kudos points. 🙂

Heart String Art

heart string

Created as a single continuous vector path in Adobe illustrator. My ‘Heart String’ art has an almost knitted feel. Designed to appear as though you could unpick and unravel the line to leave nothing but the empty page.

Would be interesting to see how this image would look actually created out of stitched string. Unfornutaly i’m not fantastic with a needle. I prefer pushing pixels and bending vectors.

Please check out my older posts for more geometric illustrator art. All questions and comments are welcome. I’d love to know what people think.

Check out my sound wave art project at mono wave art. Waveform art from recorded sound can be commisioned.
