Star Wars – May the 4th be with you (22 pics)

may the 4th

As a tribute to May 4th, I’ve compiled some of my Star Wars art. I’ve also added some fun, unusual facts. Some I didn’t know until today. As a big Star Wars fan (Not the prequels – they don’t count) I like that there is still so many random things I don’t know. May the Force be with you.

Please visit my society6 store where you can purchase prints, canvases and throw cushions of these works and others. If you are from the UK visit my art shop site where you can get high quality prints quality controlled by myself at Mono Wave Art. If there are any artworks here that you don’t see available just send me a message and i’ll sort something out.

Please comment, like and spread the good word.

Stormtrooper Fact – In the US it has been ruled that the Stormtrooper armour design is under copyright. However a 2011 UK court decision considered it to be industrial design, which is only protected for 15 years, and thus the armor is now in the public domain, but only in the UK.

R2D2 Fact – In ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ R2D2 makes an unlikely cameo in the form of ancient hieroglyphics.

Emporers Guards Fact – The Imperial Red guards apparently concealed armour, more advanced than a Stormtroopers under their robes. Not too tough really as Stormtrooper armour doesn’t allow much mobility or visibility and doesn’t protect from blasters.

‘Pantatooine’ Starwars art is created using a 40 x40 grid of 1600 (one thousand six hundred – Phew!!) swatches each. The swatch choice for each square is an average colour of that section of the photograph or scene. Close up each square is simply a Pantone (Pantatooine) swatch, From a distance, the whole image is revealed in detail.

The simple stylized minimalist illustrations are created in Adobe Illustrator. My concept was to restrain the images to a square (intended to go on cushions etc.) and use flat colours. No gradients or shading allowed.

Starwars Pantatooine – Pantone Swatch Art

Back in the good old days at college and university, all my art and design was created without the use of a computer. Anything requiring colour was rendered with high quality art markers. My marker of choice was the Pantone Tria range. Lots of colours and 3 thicknesses of nib in one pen (Although the fine-liner one always dried out way too quick!) My Pantone love is kept stong using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator on a daily basis.

Soundwave Art Inception

Mono Wave Art Inception –
The wave art concept developed by myself, Alex Patterson, originated from a summer evening surf session. It was calm night with good surf conditions, offshore breeze, 4 ft glassy waves and the sun low in the sky. Exhausted from making it through the breaking waves I took a moment to recouperate on my board (8ft 6″ Red and black mini mal if you’re interested).

As I lay there, I closed my eyes and listened to the waves. I tried to imagine how the rhythm of the waves crashing onto the shoreline and the gentle swell of the water would look visually.
The contrast between the tranquility of the undulating swell and gentle breeze against the raw power and speed of the breaking waves.

After a few more waves I returned, exhausted to the car, dried myself off and collected my recording equipment. I made my way back to the shore to try and capture something of the essence of the waves.

Later that night as I listened again to the waves I decided to try and portray the soundwaves visually.

Development –
Using various sound analysis programs and art software I extracted the soundwaves from my recordings. Soundwaves are complex and multilayered. Generally they just look a bit too messy and to me did not capture the contrast of the calmness and wild power of the waves.
After trying various techniques I converted the sound wave into a singular or ‘mono’ wave. With a few more adjustments I had the beginnings of a beautiful wave form.

The mono wave form portrayed the gentle rise and fall of the wave sounds perfectly while encompassing natures unpredictable simplicity and chaos. Using a limited minimalistic colour pallette the sound wave almost looks like the white water of a wave as it is just starting to break.

Since creating this soundwave art I have been inspired to further explore the possibilities of sound as art. My website www.monowaveart.co.uk is currently under construction. When complete I will make wave art prints available for purchase as well as the facility to create your own personalised soundwave art commissions.

ps pen tool

The pen tool is possibly my favourite photoshop tool. For years i was mistakenly using masks or lasso too to make selections. One mastered the pen tool opens up an extra element of accuracy to selections. Basically if you don’t know how touse the pen tool, you don’t know anything about photoshop.

As a design and retro pixel art geek I created this image. The simplicity of the Photoshop icon with a strong solid colour contrast perfectly.

The pixelation when enlarged, for me adds to the appeal of these art prints. Areas of the icon allow the colour of the background through just slightly. This helps blend the icon nicely and gives a more aesthetic, balanced feel.

If only real life had undo and an eraser tool. Things would be so much simpler.

Tanned Girl

Tanned Girl
Tanned Girl

I have no idea who the beautiful girl is in this illustration unfortunately. The illustration was created entirely in Adobe Illustrator. I used mesh gradients to achieve the hyper realistic skin shading.

The contrast of the left image to the right was a subtle nice and nasty contrast. The girl on the left is paler, less overt and more angelic. She has bikini ‘white bits’ showing she has an element of dignity. The girl on the left in contrast is tanned and, although almost exactly the same image, looks more outgoing. The darker skin tone and lack of tan lines suggest promiscuity and lack of shame.

I could have worked on it more in Photoshop but I wanted the image to be entirely vector and therefore completely scalable.

ps bucket

One of the most basic and simple tools in photoshop. I always loved that it was refered to as a bucket rather than a paint pot.

Ironically, the paint bucket tool wasn’t used in creating this artwork.

Goodbye Summer Love

Goodbye Summer Love

An image created in Adobe Illustrator. My attempt with this illustration was to try and portray dewey eyed sadness. The idea was that a summer romance was cut short and she knows she’ll never be with the man she loved so briefly.

The muted pale blues allow the stronger reds to dominate the scene linking the lips to the distant plane.

PS Paint Brush

PS Paint Brush

The paint brush is the first tool everyone learns when they first get photoshop. Such a simple tool initially but so versitile when perfected. This print was an attempt to evoke the memories of the inocence and wonder when first using this amazing program.
